Who am I now? ⁠
⁠
So much has changed over the past few years, and in the whirlwind of survival, I found myself wandering the streets of France last month asking myself this question, again. ⁠
⁠
Who am I now? ⁠
What do I want? ⁠
Who is this next version of Amy? ⁠
⁠
I literally teach others how to navigate life transitions and changing identities, and yet, here I was... wondering how to answer that question for myself. ⁠
⁠
And then I went to Eze, a tiny town from the middle ages on the French Riveriera, and wandered through the cobbled streets and up rambling streets into a gallery. ⁠
⁠
The minute I walked in, the artist said “I need to do your portrait”.⁠
⁠
He seemed to have cerebral palsy or had suffered a stroke, parts of his body paralysed, with knee pads and protective gear to help him when he fell. ⁠
But the room! It was full of abstract art and creativity, and his sister and carer guided me around until I found a painting I loved. ⁠
As a “bonus” he insisted, again, he drew me. ⁠
⁠
And so in the sweltering heat of a cave from the middle ages, I sat in the tiny art studio in and chatted to his sister about the pandemic and Australia and ageism while he sketched. ⁠
⁠
And the end result made me cry. ⁠
⁠
It’s abstract.

I'm not really sure it 'looks' like me in the true sense of the word.

But it felt like ME. ⁠

A new me.

Perhaps the beginnings of a new picture of me. ⁠

Always changing.

Always growing.

Always seeking. ⁠

By immersing ourselves in their perspective, we not only witness the enchantment that surrounds us but also learn valuable lessons about ourselves and the world. As we navigate the journey of matrescence, this newfound understanding can enrich our lives in profound ways. ✨⁠
⁠
Through their curious exploration and unfiltered observations, our children teach us to embrace a sense of awe and appreciation. We learn to slow down, to savor the sights, sounds, and sensations that often go unnoticed. In doing so, we cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.⁠
⁠
Their uninhibited self-expression becomes a gentle reminder for us to honor our own authenticity and embrace the fullness of who we are. Furthermore, observing the world through innocent eyes opens our hearts to compassion and empathy, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society.⁠
⁠
By embracing the magic of seeing through the eyes of wonder and awe, we embark on a journey of self-discovery, self-expression, and connection. We gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world, allowing us to grow and evolve alongside our children.⁠
⁠
It can be a hard road, mamas, but there is an abundance of light peaking through every atom of this world, if we let ourselves see it. Let us immerse ourselves in the enchantment that unfolds when we see the world through innocent eyes. May we learn from our children's inherent wisdom, rediscover our own sense of wonder, and create a life filled with magic, joy, and limitless possibilities.⁠

This is our greatest challenge. ⁠

One day, we will look back at this time of trying to figure out how to stay sane while juggling it all, and marvel at what we did. ⁠
⁠
But I don’t want to wish I did it differently. ⁠
⁠
I don’t want to miss this time, and screw up my health again. ⁠
⁠
I want to create a new definition of success for my daughters and son that shows a woman can be both creative and driven, soft and hard, passionate and compassionate. ⁠
⁠
That’s what our generation of mothers is about: rewriting the definition of being a woman. And that’s what matescence is really about: ⁠

A rising of you, the mother. ⁠
⁠

I pushed it down, keeping a smile on my face, believing that we the 'right' thing to do. ⁠
⁠
Besides, if I let it out, what would change? ⁠
⁠
In fact, it will only make it worse. ⁠
⁠
So on I would go. ⁠
⁠
Inner resentment building, outer warrior pushing on. ⁠
⁠
AND THEN THE DAM BROKE. ⁠
⁠
𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. 𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. ⁠

But what do we do with it? ⁠
⁠
And what is it really all about, anyway? ⁠
⁠
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 (𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲!), 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲. ⁠

I want us to gather together to reflect honestly about how we're feeling, and why.⁠
⁠
I want us to take off the mask of motherhood we've been wearing and allow us to FEEL it... in a safe and supportive way.⁠
⁠
And then I'd like to invite us to really look at what our anger or resentment is really trying to tell us.⁠
⁠
Is it a reaction to deep depletion?⁠
⁠
Is it a response to feeling invisible?⁠
⁠
Is it a warning sign from a tired body?⁠
⁠
Maybe it's deep worry about the world around us?⁠
⁠
Or maybe it's a wake up call and call to action to change things up and redefine your boundaries?⁠
⁠

“I thought it would be different. I wanted to be a mother so badly - it took us seven rounds of IVF and three miscarriages to get here. But now…. It’s just so hard…. ”⁠

And then, the apologies began. ⁠
⁠
“Sorry. I shouldn’t be crying. I love being a mama. Sorry.” ⁠
⁠
The guilt and the shame. The judgment of not ‘loving it all’. The tug of war within that comes from wanting something so badly and then wondering if it is really all worth it. ⁠

Why are we so afraid of sharing what we really feel? ⁠
Judgement. The deep fear of judgment.⁠
⁠
This mama goes on to tell me later that she distinctly remembers making a deal with God. As another round of IVF was began, after another devastating miscarriage, she remembers trying to negotiate a baby with whatever Universal Force was up there. ⁠
If I get this baby, I promise I will be the most loving mother ever. I will give it everything, and all of me. I will love it more than any mother has ever loved a child.⁠
⁠
So when she found herself not loving it all, she felt like a failure. And a fraud. ⁠
⁠
Where did we get this crazy idea that we must surrender all of ourselves to the needs of our children? When did being a ‘good’ mother meant we were never allowed to whisper our desire for our old lives? ⁠
